I have been away from my blog the last few months due to my day job, catching up with family and friends and summer holidays. But the good news is that I am back and have been reading some great books while away that I can’t wait to review and share with you! I have also been keeping up to date with goings on in the book world.
Harper Lee causes a stir in the book world
When it was announced that there was going to be another book by Harper Lee released in July, there was a lot of excitement in the media and among readers. The anticipation built up until the release of Go Set a Watchman and people were queuing for the book, midnight events were happening at a large bookstore in London and people were so excited. Why?
Well To Kill a Mockingbird is a highly acclaimed novel and Harper Lee a talented writer. But this is her y book and she has stayed a very private person. So it is can understandable that there is a lot of controversy around her releasing another book years after her first novel. Why did she do this and was she coerced into it people were asking. But another discussion point for me is if the new book will live up to the hype, the anticipation and be as good as the first book. Go Set a Watchman isn’t a completely new book, it links into To Kill a Mockingbird and has the same main character. So if it isn’t a great book, then will this damage Harper Lee’s reputation as a highly acclaimed writer or will her second book quietly disappear into the shadows where we forget it over the years. I think it will be interesting to see what happens.
And now I have to admit I have never read To Kill a Mockingbird, it wasn’t on my reading list at school as Irish schools tend to read great Irish writers and it never was a book that I thought I need to read compared to other great classics out there. But I am intrigued why so many people love this book. Maybe I will add both to my reading list for the future and let you know how I get on.
Grey follow up
In my March Book Blog Bundles, I wrote about Fifty Shades of Grey and what I thought of these books. Well I just have to mention that E. L. James has written a follow up called Grey that is the story told by Christian. The reviews have not been great for it as it is just a reworking of the books to be told from another point of view. Also as with the other books the writing is not great. So I have to ask – why would people read it as you know the story? I have said what I think about the books in my other blog as mentioned but I am disappointed that E. L. James has demonstrated how lazy a writer she is (my opinion) and with so many amazing, talented writers out there is all genres it is a shame that she has to overshadow them. She has reworked a successful book series and in my opinion it shows that maybe success and money may be her motivation. If she wanted another book related to this series and about Christian who people seem to love, then why not write a prequel about his life before he met the girl in Fifty Shades of Grey. I think a lot of people could have seen the point of that.
So these are not really books you can read but they are sold in bookshops and I thought I would mention them as they are a big thing at the moment. Lots of intricate designs to colour in and all you need is the colouring book and a pack of coloured pencils or pens. Some books even have pages for us to doodle on. Reading for me is a great way to de-stress and escape reality but these books are another way too. On an 8 hour flight recently I did both and tapped into my artistic side.
Happy blog birthday!
Finally my blog is 2 years old! I want to thank everyone for reading and following me. Also my blog will be having a little decorative makeover in the next month (must be those colouring books that have encouraged me!)
